The best film of last year? Two sets of parents meet following an unspeakable tragedy. An intimate out-of-nowhere triumph by a debut director, with astonishing acting.

THE OUTFIT

Dir. Graham Moore (US 2020, 106mins 15)

Mark Rylance - again!  On top form as the English tailor who must outwit a bunch of violent gangsters. Highly entertaining and gripping crime drama from another debut director.

HIT THE ROAD

Dir. Panah Panahi (Iran 2022, 93mins 15)

Enchanting and magical family road trip with a sick dog across the Iranian countryside. Wonderful photography, superb acting, joyful, heart-breaking and surreal humour in one of the year’s best.

ELVIS

Dir. Baz Luhrmann (US 2022, 159mins 15)

Epic, big-screen high-excess spectacle (and mostly fictional biog of the King of Rock n Roll) that blasts from the screen in waves of excitement. Pure cinematic entertainment.

MY DARLING CLEMENTINE

Dir. John Ford (US 1946, 97mins 12)

Classic of American cinema made in the aftermath of the Second World War. Now beautifully restored. Henry Fonda is monumental in Ford’s mythic and melancholic version of the gunfight between Wyatt Earp and the Claytons,

DAVID BRAMWELL AND THE CULT OF WATER

Film, music and animation, Sony-Award-winning BBC presenter David Bramwell delivers a magical candle-lit dream journey in search of the supernatural secrets of rivers which haunt his memories. THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN

Dir. Craig Roberts (UK 2022, 106mins 12)
