Dir. Karim Ainouz (Brazil/Germany 2019, 139mins 18)
Brazil’s entry to the Oscars and the winner of awards at Cannes is terrific. A riot of colour melodrama about two inseparable sisters who attempt to find each other after a forced separation by their tyrannical father.
Dir. Andrew Levitas (US 2021, 89mins 15)
Terrific film of the true story of the US photographer, Eugene Smith, who exposed the decades-long mercury poisoning of the residents of Minamata, Japan. This film really deserves to be seen.
Dir. Maria Sodahl (Norway 2020, 130mins 15)
Norway’s 2021 entry to the Oscars is a beautiful film with wonderful performances from Andrea Braein Hovig and Stellan Skarsgard, whose disintegrating marriage confronts the devastating news at Christmas of the wife’s terminal illness. Depressing? No, it's outstanding and human.

Sadly, director Roger Michell passed away shortly before the film’s official release.

Dir. Karel Kachyna (Czechoslovakia 1970 95mins 12)
Banned and not seen for 20 years, this darkly satirical political-paranoid-noir from the aftermath of the Prague Spring is a brilliant expose of life under totalitarianism and paved the way for Coppola’s The Conversation. Walls have ears.
Dir. Pedro Almodovar (Spain 2021, 123mins 15)
Two mothers (a brilliant Penelope Cruz and Milena Smit) of differing ages and lifestyle bond in an unexpected way after giving birth. Told with wit and warmth in typical Almodovar style of eye-popping colours and ecstatic sense of the theatrical.

Dir. Jan Komasa, Poland 2019
True story of a parolee who takes on the role of a 'priest of God' in Poland's Oscar entry. Brilliant performance from Bartosz Bielenia.

Dir. Juho Kuosmanen (Finland 2022, 107mins 15)
In a naturalistic but witty and engrossingly smart and emotional romance, two wildly mismatched travellers are forced to share a long train journey from Moscow to Murmansk. Beautifully acted and filmed.
Dir. Marian Cohn/Gaston Duprat (UK 2021 116mins 15)
Antonio Banderas in an hilarious and hugely enjoyable skewing of the movie business with a brilliant Penelope Cruz in line for an Oscar in her role of autocratic and neurotic film director.
Dir. Martin McDonagh (Ireland 2022, 114 mins, cert 15)
On a remote island off the coast of Ireland, the unorthodox falling out between lifelong friends Colm (Brendan Gleeson) and Pádraic (Colin Farrell) at the end of the Irish Civil War, when Colm suddenly decides he wants nothing more to do with his lifelong pal. Black humour.
Dir. Park Chan-Wook (Korea 2022 139mins 15)
One of the best of the last year - snubbed by the Oscars but a winner everywhere else. A twisted, obsessive, Hitchcockian-style romantic mystery. A detective investigating a man’s death falls for the dead man’s wife/suspect.
Dir. Frances O’Connor (UK 2022 125mins 15)
An imagined Emily Bronte brought to life in a very good biographical period drama with a wonderous central performance (Emma Mackay), excellent first-time direction and great visuals. Hugely enjoyable.
Dir. Eva Hussen (UK 2021 110mins 15)
Excellent acting from Colin Firth and Olivia Colman in a slow-burning, gut-wrenching atmospheric romantic period drama based on the Graham Swift novel.

Dir. Maria Schrader (US 2022, 129mins 15)
Timely, powerful and excellent. Two New York Times journalists doggedly pursue and expose the long-time and appalling sexual abuse of numerous women in the film industry by the powerful Hollywood producer and serial predator, Harvey Weinstein.
Dir. Mario Martone (Italy 2022, 118mins 15)
Wonderfully shot, superbly acted and richly detailed tale of Felice who, after forty years, returns to his hometown, Naples and meets the local priest who fights the Camorra and tries to give hope to young people. Then things become complicated.
Dir. Blerta Basholli (Kosovo 2021, 83mins 15)
Outstanding, inspiring and searing debut drama based on a true story that won the audience award at Sundance. Fahrije’s husband is missing from the War in Kosovo, she and other women set up a co-operative business selling honey but are immediately met with misogyny and hostility by the remaining men in the village.
Dir. Sarah Beddington (UK 2022, 83mins 15)
Deeply affecting and compelling documentary filmed over many years. A Palestinian refugee in Lebanon sets out to find the ancient tree which bore witness to her family’s displacement from their homeland. In the background are the birds who migrate freely in the sky above.

Dir. Justine Triel (France 2023, 148mins 15)
The controversial multi-award winner proves to be a well-crafted almost Hitchcockian legal drama. Did she kill her husband? Her blind son faces a dilemma as the only witness.
