The audience hit of the year. Auto-tuned and full of CGI, it makes no difference to the sensational reception of this exuberant celebration of the life of T.P. Barnum (Hugh Jackman). But don't forget the theme of discrimination, the excellent Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya and Keala Settle and the brilliant costumes of Ellen Mirojnick.

Known as Megan Leavey in the United States, this turned out to be one of the big films of the year which audiences absolutely loved. The uplifting true story of a young female Marine (Megan Leavey played by Kate Mara) and her combat dog with whom she develops a unique bond. After 100 successful missions, both were wounded by IED explosions in Iraq (2006). Leavey was awarded the Purple Star but what happened next leaves everyone in tears.

Wonderful, warm documentary on the life and work of folk music icon, Shirley Collins, who was central to the genre's revival in the 1960s through her rediscovery of old songs both here and in the United States. Now promoting a new highly praised album at the age of 82.

Dir. Steven Spielberg, (US 2017, 117mins 12)

A nuanced and brilliant performance from multi Oscar winner Meryl Streep as Kathrine Graham, the first female publisher of a major US newspaper (Washington Post), and the attempt with her editor (Tom Hanks as Ben Bradlee) to publish during the Nixon era the Pentagon Papers, the secret government documents on the Vietnam war leaked by Daniel Ellsberg. Entertaining and entirely relevant to our times.

For those who enjoyed Faces/Places here is a chance to see the multi-award winning film by Varda who died in March. Sandrine Bonnaire is outstanding as the young drifter who wanders through the Languedoc wine country one winter. A poetic stunner.

This swansong to Robert Redford is probably the most enjoyable film of the year. Beautifully acted, the ease of Redford is matched by Sissy Spacek in a 'mostly true' tale of an elderly, gentleman bank robber coming to the end of his days. Wonderfully directed in '70s style.

This Foreign Language Oscar nominee and Cannes winner is a freakish documentary-like drama on the civil war in Ukraine's eastern region where the lawless fanatics in control of gangs unleash open conflict, crimes and looting. Kaleidoscope of fake-news and degradation: war film of the year?

Holmfirth's own comedic actor introduces his favourite film - a film that Stanley Kubrick called the 'best historical drama ever made'.

The last weeks of one of the leaders of the French Revolution, George Danton, brilliantly played by Gerard Depardieu, and his battle with Robespierre in what is an overwhelming indictment of government oppression. The great Polish director created an Oscar winning film that still today, holds a mirror to the past and to the present.

Hollywood's best films are in the coming of age genre. Obama's favourite film of last year is a bold and painfully funny take on the awkwardness of adolescence in an age of social media that looks and feels like the real thing. Elsie Fisher as the 13 year-old is simply brilliant.

Dir. Peter Kominsky (UK 1992, 106mins 12)

Emily Bronte's novel has seen many adaptions - this one by Anne Devlin takes on the whole novel and deserves a reassessment. The great Juliette Binoche, the debut of Ralph Fiennes, wonderful music from Ryuichi Sakamoto and uncredited narration by Sinead O'Connor produce a very good film - but will it satisfy lovers of the novel?

Following the film, a discussion led by academic and award-winning novelist Michael Stewart creator of the Brontë Stones project, four monumental stones sited between the Brontë's birthplace in Thornton, Bradford and Haworth parsonage, inscribed with poems by Kate Bush, Carol Ann Duffy and Jeannette Winterson. Currently writing a book about the landscapes that inspired the Brontës.

Also participating, John Wheatley, director of forthcoming production of a play of the book at Southgate Theatre.

A great opportunity for book-clubs or anyone who loves Emily Brontë's novel.
